What Character Animation Actually Costs — Commissions vs Asset Store vs AI
For a solo developer, character animation is the bottleneck. Idle, walk, attack, hit is already four motions — split those by direction and you're past ten. There are three usual options: commission an artist, buy from an asset store, or generate with AI. Here's what each actually costs, and what you pay besides money.
Commissions: exactly what you want, priced per motion
An artist gives you your art style and your character, done right. The cost scales with the number of motions. Published commission rates land somewhere around $20–150 for a sprite set, climbing from there with frame count and detail. Many pixel artists estimate a couple of hours per frame, which makes an eight-frame walk cycle a full day of work. Add revision rounds and turnaround time, and four motions means hundreds of dollars and one to two weeks before it's in your build.
Asset store: cheapest by far, but it isn't your character
Pre-made character packs start in the low tens of dollars with the motions already included. On price alone, nothing competes. The catch is that it isn't your character. The moment you need a motion the pack doesn't have, you're back to commissioning the same artist or accepting a style mismatch — and players who've seen the same sprite in another game will notice. Perfect for prototypes and game jams, risky as the hero of a project you plan to ship.
AI generation: roughly $1–2 per motion
Concretely, on GenioPlus: one animation generation costs 10 credits at 480p, or 20 at 720p. Credits work out to around $0.07 each on a subscription, so a motion runs about $0.70–1.50. Assume two or three attempts before you like the result and it's $2–4 per motion, or $10–20 for a four-motion set. In time, that's minutes per motion. Background removal, the cutout editor, frame extraction, and sheet assembly don't spend credits at all, so your real cost tracks generation attempts only.
What you actually pay for with AI is cleanup
Honestly: AI output isn't always ship-ready. Small details — an accessory, the shape of a hand — can wobble between frames, and very specific motions (a signature attack with a unique weapon) are hard to get exactly right from a prompt. So the real workflow is generate, keep only the frames that work, then touch up what drifted. That cleanup is nothing like drawing from scratch, and because re-running is nearly free, you can keep trying until it lands.
The short version
Prototyping with an unfinalized character? The asset store gets you moving fastest. Character locked and a growing list of motions? AI generation wins on cost and speed, and you can hand-fix only the motions that come out ambiguous. For the hero character that defines your game's look, or a signature cinematic move, a human artist is still better. In practice most teams mix all three — AI for NPCs and mobs, a commission for the protagonist's key motions.
